Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) is a cosmetic procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen. Patients may choose this procedure to reverse the effects of weight gain or pregnancy. Ideal candidates have excess skin and fat that is not responsive to diet and exercise, are healthy and have had a stable weight for at least 6 months. Dr. Power tailors the procedure to each patient to define the natural waistline and optimize the overall abdominal contour. This usually includes removal of excess fat and skin, tightening of the abdominal muscles and liposuction.

Procedure

Abdominoplasty is performed under general anesthesia as a day surgery procedure and takes about 2-2.5 hours. Excess skin and fat are removed through a horizontal incision along the lower abdomen which results in a scar from hip-to-hip and around the re-positioned umbilicus (belly button). Tightening of the abdominal muscles (rectus diastasis repair) is usually performed as well as liposuction to give the best contour and shape. Patients who have lost a substantial amount of weight and have a lot of excess skin may also need a vertical incision (Fleur-de-lis abdominoplasty).

Drains may remain in place temporarily after the surgery to collect excess fluid. All sutures are dissolvable. You will wear a compression garment after the surgery.

Recovery

Prescription pain medication may be needed for a few days following surgery. You will have a dressing to cover your incisions. You may shower 3 days after surgery and will wear a compression garment full time for 6-12 weeks. Drains are typically removed about 7 days following surgery.

Early walking for short distances around the house is important to prevent blood clots and should begin the day after your surgery.

Depending on the type of work that you do, you will likely need 2-6 weeks off work for recovery. Strenuous exercise and lifting more than 10 lbs is to be avoided for 6 weeks following surgery.

Smoking impairs wound healing and increases your risk of having postoperative complications. You should refrain from smoking for 2 months before surgery and for 6 weeks afterwards.
